About

Olu Oyenakpagha, also known as Obanighenren and by his Portuguese name Don Antonio Domingos, was the 8th Olu of the Warri Kingdom and ruled over the Itsekiri people from about 1643 to 1653. Born Omonighenren (meaning 'Prince with the golden skin'), he was the son of Olu Atuwatse I (Dom Domingos), the 7th Olu, whom he succeeded on the throne. On ascending the throne he took the name Obanighenren ('King with the golden skin'), and he is notable for writing a letter to Pope Clement X in 1652 reflecting the kingdom's longstanding ties with Portugal and the Catholic Church. He was succeeded by his brother, Olu Omoluyiri, the 9th Olu of Warri.
