About
Don Dieghe, also known as Dieghe, was the 10th Olu (traditional ruler) of the Warri Kingdom, which is part of the Itsekiri people in present-day Delta State, Nigeria. He succeeded his father, Dom Domingos, the 9th Olu, in a line of christianized monarchs that emerged from early Portuguese contact in the Niger Delta. His title and name reflect the sustained cultural and commercial ties between the Itsekiri kingdom and European powers, particularly the Portuguese, during the early modern period. Little detailed documentation survives of his specific deeds, but he ruled during an era in which the Warri monarchy consolidated its influence over regional trade and maintained diplomatic and religious connections with Europe.
