About
Dom Domingos, also known as Atuwatse I, was the 9th Olu of Warri, reigning approximately from 1660 to 1680. He was the son of Omoluyiri (the 8th Olu, also known as Dom Mathias) and continued the dynasty’s engagement with Portuguese traders and missionaries. His Christian name, Dom Domingos, reflects the long-established ties between the Warri Kingdom and Portugal, particularly in commerce and religion. During his reign, the kingdom maintained its position as an important centre of trade in the western Niger Delta, dealing in slaves, ivory and other goods. Little is recorded about his personal life or specific events, but he is remembered as a ruler who upheld the prosperity and diplomatic relations of his father’s era.
