Umueze Progenitor
About
Umueze (also rendered Umuezei) is the senior quarter (Ebo) of Asaba Kingdom in Delta State, Nigeria, and is traditionally said to have been founded by Ezenei (also called Ezei), a grandson of Nnebisi, the founding ancestor of Asaba. According to oral tradition, Nnebisi had two direct sons, Onne and Ezeumunne; Ezenei was a son of Onne, and together with his brothers and cousins (Ugbomanta, Agu, Ajaji and Onaje) he became progenitor of one of the five quarters that make up the present-day Asaba (Ahaba Ebo Ise). Because Ezenei was the eldest, Umueze/Umuezei ranks first in the order of precedence among the five Ruling Houses, and the rotation of the Asagba of Asaba throne begins with this quarter. The 13th Asagba, Prof. Joseph Chike Edozien, was from Umuezei.
