About

Adaigbo (also spelled Odaigbo) is traditionally remembered as the founder and first Obi of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in present-day Delta State, Nigeria. According to oral histories, he was a prince and descendant of Eze Nri from Agukwu Nri who, according to some traditions, was banished from Nri for committing an abomination, and led a group of Nri migrants who encountered the earlier Ikelike (Benin-origin) settlers at the site. Adaigbo imposed leadership based on Igbo customs and tradition on the existing settlers, establishing the Obiship (monarchy) system in what became the Ogwashi-Uku kingdom. His original republican-style system later gave way to the hereditary kingship pattern influenced by Benin tradition.
