Esigie was the eighth Orodje (king) of Okpe, a traditional Urhobo kingdom in present-day Delta State, Nigeria. He ascended the throne in 1942, succeeding previous monarchs, and his reign lasted three decades until his passing in 1972. His father was Egharevba, a member of the royal lineage. The Okpe Kingdom is one of the major Urhobo political entities, with its seat in Orerokpe, and the Orodje is the paramount ruler. Esigie’s reign witnessed Nigeria’s transition from colonial rule to independence and the early post-independence years, a period of significant change in the region.
